The former Chelsea manager is adamant Manchester United have come a long way since he left Chelsea in the summer of 2015.
“I think it’s great to be back and it’s a new experience for everyone, and the players have to be proud of that.
It’s a huge step forward and I’m sure we’ll get there, but I think we’re all going to work very hard to get there,” Mourinho told Sky Sports.
Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is also in the frame for the Premier League title and United are likely to be favourites to win it.
Mourinho is keen to get back into the title race and Mourinho has told him the squad is “getting there”.
“We have the players who are really good.
We have a team of great players, so they are getting there,” he added.
It was Mourinho who secured a new contract with United in August 2015.
“After I left Chelsea, I was in the Champions League and I said to [team-mate] Radamel Falcao, ‘We have to work for the Champions league’.
He said ‘Yes, I can help you’.
He’s one of the most important players in our squad, so it’s important for us to work with him,” Mourinho added.”
I’ve always felt in this job, you have to help someone else and we have that in this club, so I’m always with him.”
Now I’m in charge, I’m happy because I’ve got a great team, with a great squad.
I don’t think I’ve been happier, but it’s always been my aim to win the league.
But, in this moment, this moment with United, it’s going to be important to win.
“I think the team is getting there, the squad are getting closer to where they need to be.”
If we win the title, then we have a good chance.
We are all working together, and we will win the League.
“But if we don’t, it is going to happen.
I’m not worried about it.
We all know we are all here to do our job and win the Championship.”
